The Open Sky curriculum focuses on fostering critical thinking and practical skills development in three realms: self, community, and environment. Curriculum focuses on everything from the geology of the land on which the students are living to learning the constellations they see vividly in the night sky. Students may choose books to read from the Open Sky library and many find themselves discovering or rediscovering the joys of reading. In addition, during their stay at Open Sky, students have the opportunity to become certified in the critical life skills of first aid and CPR, taught by an American Heart Association instructor.
Curriculum sessions are a part of the daily routine. The active, experiential learning environment at Open Sky supports students who may struggle in traditional school environments. Specific areas of focus include:
- Geology
- Astronomy
- Weather
- Local Plants and Animals
- First Aid & CPR (American Heart Association Certified)
- Reading
- Journaling and creative writing
