Emily Demong, LCSW
Assistant Clinical Director

Emily has worked with adolescents and families in wilderness settings for over ten years as a field therapist, field instructor, and field director. Emily grew up in Vermont and earned her BA with high honors from Bates College in Maine, where she focused undergraduate coursework on adolescent girls’ psychology and creative writing. After graduating from college, Emily worked as a teaching fellow at an arts-based public elementary school in New York City.  On a wilderness trip in Alaska with the National Outdoor Leadership School in 1995, Emily discovered she could combine two of her passions: working with youth and being outdoors. In the ten years since, she has worked for Aspen Achievement Academy, Hurricane Island Outward Bound School, Connecticut Wilderness School, and the National Outdoor Leadership School.  Experienced as a therapist, field instructor, trainer, logistics coordinator, emergency responder, and field director, Emily holds a comprehensive view of wilderness therapy.

In 2005, Emily earned a Master’s of Social Work from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.  During her graduate studies, Emily held internships at an outpatient community mental health center for children and adolescents, a therapeutic wilderness program for adolescents, and the University of Utah Counseling Center.  Coursework on attachment theory, psychodynamic theory, research methods, and developmental theory augmented her years of direct experience working with youth and families.  Emily is currently licensed as a Certified Social Worker (CSW) in the state of Utah and a Licensed Social Worker (LSW) in the state of Colorado.

Over the years, Emily has studied various health and wellness disciplines that influence her work.  Emily has been a yoga practitioner for 7 years, and in 2002 completed a teacher training course with Richard Freeman in Boulder, CO.  Her yoga practice has also been supplemented by regular practice in wilderness work settings; she is known to hold poses in snow squalls, swarms of mosquitoes, and gusty wind storms! Her favorite places to write a poem, read a book, enjoy conversation, or share a meal are by desert red rocks, high mountain peaks, or the ocean’s shore.
