As a former wilderness field therapist, Lauren was inspired by the magic of the wilderness and the successes of her students. This love of working with teens evolved into a passion for working with the whole family system. Prior to her career as a therapist, Lauren worked as a sales and marketing professional, where she used her ability to listen to her customers and determine their specific needs to help them on several levels, with services, training, and inventive ideas. Given her therapeutic education, wilderness field experience, and outgoing yet kindly manner, Lauren merges all her comprehensive qualifications into her position as Admissions Director. Lauren’s innovative and compassionate skills are of benefit to Open Sky families and referring professionals. In addition to evaluating the appropriateness of student applicants, Lauren handles the marketing and outreach needs as well as provides education to the marketplace about the value of Open Sky’s programming. Before coming to Open Sky, Lauren worked in Denver, CO with adolescents involved in the legal system, where she taught a writers’ workshop and helped publish a book of their poems and stories. With knowledge of the strengths every person possesses and awareness that most true talents might not yet be realized, Lauren has a fondness for drawing out these qualities and helping Open Sky students realize their potential. She believes that students’ long-term success is linked to the extent with which their families are involved in the therapeutic process. Lauren approaches work with students and families collaboratively, taking in the power of the family, staff, student, and other professionals to assist in the growth and success of each young person. It was her love of the family system and her desire to insure incoming Open Sky families were treated with compassion and care that Lauren moved into the admissions role. When Lauren is not on the phone assisting families and referring professionals in finding the help they need, she can be found writing fiction (tell her a good story and you might find yourself in one of her projects!), laughing, daydreaming, or playing light-hearted practical jokes. She received her MA in Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education from the University of Colorado, Denver, and her BA from the University of Wisconsin. She is also a licensed professional counselor.
