Why does Open Sky have a full-time naturopathic physician on staff?
Having a full-time naturopathic physician not only makes Open Sky unique in the wilderness therapy industry, it also shows our dedication to the holistic treatment of every student and family with whom we work. In our view, adding the element of naturopathic medicine is perfectly complementary to the work of wilderness therapy. Both professions have a clear commitment to going “back to basics,” the ability to heal from within, and the teachings of nature.
What is naturopathic medicine and how can it help?
Naturopathic medicine combines safe and effective traditional therapies with the most current advances in modern medicine. Methods used are consistent with these principles and are chosen upon the basis of patient individuality. Naturopathic physicians address the underlying cause of disease through effective natural therapies that integrate the healing powers of body, mind, heart and soul. Naturopathic physicians are unique in providing diagnosis and treatment that bridges both conventional and natural medicine perspectives; they integrate scientific research with the healing powers of nature. more info
What is the education and training involved in becoming a naturopathic physician?
A licensed naturopathic physician (ND) attends a four-year graduate level naturopathic medical school and is educated in all of the same basic sciences as an MD. S/he studies holistic and non-toxic approaches to therapy with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and optimizing wellness. In addition to a standard medical curriculum, the naturopathic physician is required to complete training in botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathic medicine, hydrotherapy, physical medicine, acupuncture, psychology and counseling. A naturopathic physician takes both basic science and clinical national board exams so that s/he may be licensed by a state or jurisdiction as a primary care physician. They are the only primary care physicians clinically trained in the use of a wide variety of natural therapeutics.
What is the premise of the naturopathic approach to medicine?
The Naturopathic Physician's primary purpose is to restore, maintain and optimize health by incorporating the following principles in order to provide individualized care: First Do No Harm; The Healing Power of Nature; Identify and Treat the Cause; Doctor as Teacher; Treat the Whole Person; and Prevention. Naturopathic medicine is distinguished by the principles which underlie and determine its practice. These principles are based upon the objective observation of the nature of health and disease, and are continually reexamined in the light of scientific advances.
How does my child/family access naturopathic services via Open Sky?
As part of enrolling with Open Sky every student will receive a complete naturopathic assessment and the physician’s impressions will then be relayed to the family. Each interview is catered to the needs of the client, making for truly individualized care. This assessment includes a comprehensive look at past medical history, current imbalances and complaints, and family history. There is a large focus on diet and nutrition. The naturopathic physician takes the dietary information and connects it to how you’re feeling throughout the day including energy lulls, emotional changes and symptoms. Part of the interview focuses on mental-emotional health and how one handles life stressors. Because of the diversity of a naturopathic physician’s training, each client will be offered a unique approach to addressing their presenting issues. A treatment plan will be created with input from the whole team: student, family, therapist, educational consultant, and doctor. If the family is interested in including naturopathic care in their wellness plan an interview can be completed with the naturopathic physician by phone or a local referral can be made. |
