Young Adults now “Emerging Adults”?
Models regarding human social development can explain quite a bit about what is expected from birth to adulthood and into the final stages of life. Along the way, or so the theories propose, are a set of stages and milestones that mark the end of one stage and the beginning of the next.
Among the most complex to grasp are those between childhood and adulthood. Hard to believe, but the mere acceptance of adolescence as a stage in and of itself is a fairly new concept dating to the early 1900’s. More recently, the latest stage to be debated is that of the 20-something age group. Coupled with social, political, and economic circumstances never seen before, this age group is experiencing a new reality never faced by their ancestors.
The debate will ensue for some time as to the credibiity of a new stage, but from our perspective, at the least, there is serious need to consider the reality that being 22 and a fresh college grad is much different than it was just a couple of decades ago (or for that matter, 18 years-old and a fresh high school grad).
At Open Sky, we work with many young adults that are “failing to launch.” We have gained some insight into the unique needs of this group of young women and men and found this NY Times article “What is it about 20-Somethings?” to be a fascinating summary of the latest thoughts on this new life stage. We hope you find some answers to your questions.
Our young adult program works with 18 to 28 year-old men and women dealing with any number of complex mental health issues and sometimes substance abuse or chemical dependency. To learn more about our highly successful, and proven program, visit our website’s young adult program page.
