In Wilderness Therapy Since:
Tanya was born in Washington State and her early years were spent outside exploring nature, enjoying her friends, and doing chores around the farm where she grew up. This spurred a lifelong passion for the outdoors and nature. It is no wonder she made it to working at Open Sky many years later.
After earning her Associates of Arts degree, Tanya enjoyed a fruitful career in the retail industry. Her work encompassed establishing new stores, training employees, and presenting motivational talks about positive attitude in the workplace. In 1998, she was sent to Durango to help open a local store. It was a significant promotion and without knowing anything about Durango, Tanya packed up her things, loaded up her Great Dane, Odion, and changed her life forever.
After deciding to move on from the retail business, Tanya furthered her education at Fort Lewis College here in Durango. She successfully earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with an ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement. The patience, creativity and kindness that she honed in through her teaching, education and experience has been a great resource for her roles at Open Sky.
One of Tanya’s biggest strengths is her ability to quickly establish warm connections through compassionate, mindful conversations with potential families, in her daily interactions with her colleagues, and her coordination of the Family Services team. Tanya believes deeply in the healing power of nature and its ability to assist people in fostering acceptance for who they are, away from the constant pressures that society demands.
While Open Sky was Tanya’s first experience in wilderness therapy, she believes it has given her the opportunity to reconnect with nature and to assist in her own personal growth, making her an even stronger asset to the Open Sky Community. When not in the office working with families, you can find her outdoors with her dogs, paddling the local lakes, sharing food and laughter with friends, or practicing yoga. She also loves to travel the world and experience other cultures, and already has quite the list, having been to France, Jordan, Mexico, Guatemala, Spain, Portugal, Honduras, the Netherlands, and England, with plans for many more to come!
