Katherine Nicoll Newbury, BA
Katie has been working as a guide in the wilderness industry since 2007. Prior to Open Sky, she was a Wilderness Trail Guide for YMCA Camp Widjiwagan in MN, a NOLS Instructor , and a Senior Field Staff for Three Rivers in Montana. She received her BA in English, from Williams College.
A defining moment in Katie’s life was an 8 ½ month bike trip the length of South America with her best girlfriend from childhood. She fondly recalls re-assembling bikes at the Ushuaia Airport, ditching the boxes, and pedaling away, unstable and wobbly with our new, heavy loads, yet defying the gravity of disbelievers and fear.
Since 2013, Katie has been bringing her perspective, patience and unconditional love to her work as a Family Quest Guide at Open Sky. She enjoys the work because she believes in people and the process. Katie believes there is power and truth in the wilderness and, when stripped of distractions, we come closer to seeing and believing in our own basic goodness.
When not in the field, you’ll find Katie riding all sorts of bikes (mountain, tandem mountain, tour, and road), skiing, mountaineering, cooking, coloring with crayons and reading.
