Danny received his Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Texas A&M University. He is a co-founder of Open Sky and has been involved in wilderness therapy since 1996. After accumulating over 700 field days as a field guide, he ascended into leadership and served five years as field director, including three at Open Sky. He now works primarily in business development and marketing and assists the admissions team as needed. With an easy-going nature and extensive wilderness experience, Danny provides students and families with a calming presence during a normally stressful time.

In 1996, Danny worked as a summer intern for Galena Ridge Wilderness Program inspiring him to pursue the work full-time upon graduating college. In 1998, he began working as a field instructor for Aspen Achievement Academy, and over subsequent years Danny spent over 450 field days working directly with young people at Aspen. In 2003, Danny accepted the position of Field Director at Aspen, a position he held through 2005. In this role, Danny oversaw all aspects of the department, including personnel management, program delivery, emergency response, staff selection, development and training. For six consecutive summers, from 1997 to 2002, Danny worked for the Voyageur Outward Bound School in Montana as an instructor, including course director, trainer, and program logistics manager. Between Aspen and Outward Bound, Danny has accrued over 700 field days as a field instructor.

Danny graduated cum laude from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Management with an emphasis in Human Resources. Danny has received extensive training in applied strategic planning, marketing, business development, and leadership. Danny has conducted trainings for Voyageur Outward Bound School, Montana State University, Aspen Achievement Academy, and R.L. Frazer & Associates.

Danny’s passion for the wilderness was ignited at an early age while wandering around just out the backdoor of his childhood home in the undeveloped hill country of Austin, Texas. At age six, along with his father and brother, he went on his first foray into the mountains of Colorado; this was the first time he felt the moving spirit of wilderness and the intimate connections it fosters among people. Since then, it has become his life calling to facilitate this same experience for youth, adults, and families. On Danny’s free time, he is known to hike solo in the canyon country of the southwest, mountain bike in and around Durango or put on his skis for time in the backcountry after a fresh snowfall.
