Mary Zaunbrecher, MS, LPC, Joins Open Sky Clinical Team

The Open Sky Team

Mary Zaunbrecher began her studies in counseling with the intention of helping others through the use of alternative and creative therapies, including art and play. She received a Master’s of Science in Counselor Education from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. During and after her graduate experience, Mary worked with diverse populations utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions and creative methods to meet the needs of those with whom she worked. As she began exploring a world outside of traditional residential settings, she found that she connected deeply with the power of wilderness therapy.

By providing compassion and support, Mary creates space for deep reflection and meaningful growth. Throughout her work, she strives to model authenticity and transparency and encourages the same attributes in her clients. She has worked with young adults experiencing depression, anxiety, troubled relationships, grief and loss, substance use, and codependency. Through the years, Mary has developed a straightforward therapeutic approach focused on honesty, accountability, and action. She values working with the family system, providing support and guidance so that families can experience more effective and appropriate communication and connection.

Mary Zaunbrecher believes that by building an environment based on trust and support, her students can begin to explore meaningful alternatives to past patterns, thoughts, and behaviors. The wilderness setting strengthens this exploration by providing growth opportunities in an environment free from day-to-day distractions. Working within this framework, individuals experience self-empowerment, belonging, and insight, which serve to cultivate healthy values and life skills for the future.
