Young Adult Profile

Open Sky Wilderness Therapy treats young men and women, ages 18 to 30. For many, adulthood is characterized as a time of freedom and being on one's own, unburdened by parental constraints. For young adults at Open Sky, this time can be confusing and difficult. Many of our young adults are motivated to make the full-fledged move into the maturity of adulthood, but are hampered by self-doubt, lack of motivation, substance abuse, depression, addiction, and/or anxiety. Using an individualized, strengths-based approach, Open Sky assists young adults in becoming healthy, capable, and confident young men and women.

Open Sky’s team of licensed, highly experienced therapists use the most current, research-proven treatment modalities and pursue continuing education to stay current and increase their effectiveness. Training and specialized subject areas include assessment and diagnosis, adolescent and young adult development, family systems theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment theory, transpersonal psychology, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), substance abuse treatment, and motivational interviewing.

Exclusionary Criteria

Wilderness therapy is often recognized as one of the most effective treatment modalities for young adult issues; however, certain diagnoses and characteristics present challenges. Our exclusionary criteria are designed to ensure that each young adult receives effective treatment, without compromising safety or efficacy.

We do not treat current untreated sex offenders, severe eating disorders that require hospitalization, students with a history of significant aggressive or assaultive behavior outside the home, certain severe clinical diagnoses (e.g., active psychosis, extreme conduct disorder), certain severe health conditions and very low cognitive function. For more information on the exclusionary criteria, please contact our admissions team: 970-758-8324.
