Chase has been a Field Guide for Open Sky since March 2017. He earned a BS in Recreation and Leisure Management with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation. Prior to joining Open Sky, he worked as an adventure guide for people with disabilities in Pennsylvania and Breckenridge, Colorado. He grew to learn and experience that the wilderness is a healing place for everyone, and he was drawn to wilderness therapy because of this. He loves the family-centered programming at Open Sky; that both the students and families work hard on their own and together in order to improve the family system.
As a Field Guide, Chase gets to share his love of the wilderness with the students, and witness them achieving things that they never thought were possible. He enjoys building strong relationships with the students and values the opportunity to help them through their dark moments. By teaching them things like bow drilling fire and coming alongside them during hikes, he sees the students grow in self-efficacy, pride and confidence. Chase brings humor and a flexible guiding style to his guide team. He excels at hard skills like bow drilling and navigation, and provides a calming presence in all situations.
Chase loves all aspects of the outdoors. While in high school, he competed in the Virginia high school state championship bass fishing tournament. Nowadays, during his time off, Chase loves the challenge of white water river activities and alpine rock climbing in the summer. During the winter, he enjoys learning how to ice climb and ski.
