Danny’s passion for the outdoors was ignited at an early age, wandering the undeveloped hill country around Austin, Texas. His first foray into the mountains was as a boy in Colorado with his father and brother. The connection he felt during this time in the wilderness became his life calling, and he is dedicated to facilitating healing wilderness experiences and connections for youth, adults, and families.
After graduating cum laude from Texas A&M University with a BBA in management and human resources, he went on to work in wilderness therapy and for Outward Bound in a variety of roles, including programmatic, logistics, and field leadership. Over the eight years prior to Open Sky’s inception, Danny accumulated more than 700 field days working directly with adolescents and young adults.
As Admissions and Senior Program Director, Danny combines his passion for connecting with families while staying grounded in the heart of Open Sky’s program delivery. With his multi-faceted skill set and steady leadership style, Danny has served in various leadership roles across the organization since helping found Open Sky in 2006. His compassionate demeanor combined with his deep knowledge of the inner workings of the program—from Field to Medical, Clinical to Family Services, Intake to Operations—makes him uniquely suited to answer any question as families consider whether Open Sky is the right fit for their child and family.
A leader and mentor both within and outside Open Sky, Danny has served as chair of the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Council, the field’s leading organization representing over 20 wilderness programs throughout North America.
As the father of two sons, Danny spends most of his free time with his wife and family. He revels in getting out on skis with his boys or playing soccer or basketball together in local parks. Danny often gets out on weekends to enjoy the local trails by foot or mountain bike. When he isn’t out in nature, he is likely attending a strength and conditioning class in preparation for another active season outdoors.
