Joe came to Open Sky in January of 2020 with teaching and guiding experience in the outdoors. He held assistant teacher positions in college and led winter expeditions using fire, off-trail navigation, and tarp shelters. He was also a program leader at Deer Hill Expeditions and an intern at High Mountain Institute.
Joe pursued wilderness therapy as an opportunity to offer his love and passion for the natural world to youth and adults. He wanted to work with a population that is struggling in life to offer perspective and healing. He was drawn to the yoga and meditation foundations at Open Sky, as well as the fire busting and primitive skills.
In his role, Joe most values offering a sense of place and deep connection to the mountains in the desert. He values learning and growing together with students and understanding how to be our best selves while being in honest relationship to one another. His strengths are his knowledge and passion for botany and the natural world, and his playfulness and light-heartedness, risk management, and decision making. Joe works collaboratively with other guides, allowing space for bringing their passions into the work as well.
During his time off, Joe loves climbing, fly fishing, botanizing, snowboarding, and getting into the backcountry.
