Prior to joining Open Sky as a guide in 2018, Joey spent a lot of time working with youth prior to Open Sky. He was a teacher’s assistant in a 6th grade classroom, working with students with social and behavioral challenges. He also worked with youth on an experiential education trip to Cuba for high schoolers and as a camp counselor in Israel for a summer.
Joey’s connection and sense of calm he experiences in nature brought him to wilderness therapy. He has strong memories of what it’s like to be in a group in the wilderness from his experience as a camper and camp counselor. He was drawn to Open Sky specifically by its emphasis on mindfulness and meditation. As a senior guide, Joey values the connections he makes with the students and other guides, as well as the opportunity the role gives him to have an impact on the lives of others. Joey’s strengths are his ability to go with the flow and to show up authentically with students and his guide team.
During his time off, Joey likes to mountain bike, spend time with friends, and go backpacking.
