Kalen Koch, MA, LPCC, NCC

Therapist

Kalen, having grown up along the beaches of Florida, got her first dose of mountain air when she attended college in North Carolina.  She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in both Biology and Psychology from Elon University, the place that expanded her zest for exploration and passion for holistic health.  After an abroad experience in New Zealand, her love of exploring new cultures, adventure, and pushing herself outside of her comfort zone flourished.  Kalen continued expanding her views as she sailed around the world gaining knowledge from 13 different countries and cultures with Semester at Sea through the University of Virginia.  She returned to the United States with an open mind: open to different ways of life and beliefs, open to change, open to stepping into the unknown.  She gained a global perspective, grew in her own personal emotional work, and developed a passion for helping others help themselves.

After her transforming journey throughout her undergraduate experience, Kalen knew she wanted to pursue a career in mental health in order to help foster transformation for others. Kalen went on to earn a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Central Florida, in addition to earning her yoga teacher training certification.  She discovered enthusiasm in working with adolescents throughout her Graduate Assistantship, teaching a career exploration course for first-year students.  She believes giving children and adolescents tools for developing a resilient mindset can lead to their own self-empowerment.  Thus, she created a resilience and mindfulness course curriculum to teach middle and high school students in the Orlando, Florida area.

In her work, Kalen brings an open, nonjudgmental, and genuine mindset while blending together different modalities including cognitive behavior therapy, mindfulness, family systems therapy, motivational interviewing, and positive psychology.  After establishing rapport, she integrates the approaches that best fit the needs of the person in front of her.  Kalen enjoys quickly developing connection with others, and views that human connection as an important step in cultivating growth.  She brings her positive energy with her, creating a welcoming space for all of the families with which she interacts.

Kalen knew she wanted a career integrating the healing effects of the outdoors, yoga, mental health counseling, and exploring outside of one’s comfort zone.  Kalen believes Open Sky perfectly aligns with her values and passions.  She is excited to help facilitate growth within family systems through strengthening relationships, exploring role dynamics, and fostering safe spaces for healing and transformation.

Kalen grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, regularly basking in the peaceful, ocean air.  She is extremely close with her family and enjoys their adventures together, full of endless laughter provided by her Dad and sister, and beautiful connection provided by her Mom.  She loves exploring an entirely different landscape in Colorado!  She enjoys making time for reading, singing, practicing yoga, watching Jacksonville Jaguars games, FaceTiming friends, CrossFit, hiking and trying new things.
