Mary Burchard, BA

Transition Mentor

Mary was raised in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, where she grew up adventuring in the outdoors and exploring wild, natural spaces. While earning her undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology from Western Washington University, Mary continued her pursuits in outdoor recreation. When she combined her two passions (shared community experience and nature), wilderness therapy became a clear path.

Mary joined the Open Sky team in 2016 as a Field Guide with years of experience as a camp counselor, raft guide, and mediator. She worked her way up to Senior Guide and valued her role with students in holding space for challenging emotions, taking time to honor the land, staying curious, and being a goofball. Now as the Transition Mentor, she values coming alongside parents and families in similar ways through the graduation process and transition after Open Sky.

Mary is the youngest of five kids with a very large extended family (Irish Catholic!). She is a lover of the arts, especially fine art and design. Mary loves fresh flowers in her home and she rejuvenates through yoga and reading books while drinking tea. International travel experience supports Mary in finding comfort in discomfort.
