Matt’s formal education in wilderness nature-based skills began at the Audubon Expedition Institute during his first year of college. Matt attended Prescott College and earned a degree in Outdoor Experiential Education with a minor in Holistic Healing. His interest, education, and first-hand experiences in the natural world have allowed Matt to explore and work with organizations that promote the growth of human potential.
Matt brings to Open Sky over two decades of wilderness experiences and teaching. He has logged more than 2,500 backcountry field days in a wide variety of ecosystems. Over the years, Matt has had the pleasure of working for numerous organizations. Most memorable is Thistledew Camp, a wilderness therapy program for the Minnesota Department of Corrections where he spent seven years working with adjudicated boys.
As part of the Transport Team and as the Assistant Transport Manager, Matt is often the first face and introduction to the program for arriving students. It is his role to build and foster trust and to introduce the student to the program by answering questions, outfitting them for their stay, and providing them an overview of the program.
During Matt’s time off, he enjoys spending time with his wife, doing hand-craft projects, and teaching traditional living skills.
