Samuel Joseph Johnson, BA

Assistant Field Director

Growing up in heavily wooded Massachusetts inspired a special love of forests in Sam. Some of his earliest memories involve climbing trees, swinging on vines, and camping in Vermont’s Green Mountains.

Higher education helped Sam focus his passion for the outdoors. In 2012 he completed his BA in Christian Ministries with a concentration in Outdoor Education. Sam began his career in the field working for an adventure-based leadership development program in Jackman, Maine. He then worked with ADHD/LD high school students at SOAR, an expedition boarding school based in North Carolina. After a winter in Hong Kong facilitating adventure education with international boarding school students, he landed at Open Sky in January 2015.

What drew Sam to Open Sky was its industry-leading, comprehensive approach to healing—an organic diet, mindfulness, regular exercise, and epic wilderness settings. He served 200+ days as a field guide, and then served as a Family Services Wilderness Guide, Lead Transporter, and Transport Manager before accepting the position of Assistant Field Director.

In his off time, Sam loves snuggling with his infant son, Forest, and partner, Megan. He also enjoys backpacking, cooking, disc golf, swimming in alpine lakes, and DIY projects.
