Sean Murphy, BAAS

Operations Assistant

Boston born and Texas raised, Sean is a graduate of the University of North Texas. Sean spent eight formative summers and several off-seasons working in a variety of roles at Philmont Scout Ranch, a 140,000-acre Scout High Adventure Base located in northeast New Mexico. After working at Philmont, Sean was ready to continue his work in supporting outdoor youth development. He learned about Open Sky through his partner and her family as her brother is a graduate of Open Sky. From the first time she visited Open Sky and interacted with the staff she told him “Sean, this place is special. I want us to be a part of it.” With a glance at the Operations Assistant job description, Sean was hooked.

Sean brings a wealth of knowledge of the ins and outs of field operations from his job serving as a Backcountry Manager at Philmont. In this role, he mentored backcountry staff and delivered large-scale support throughout the Philmont backcountry. Sean’s strengths include an innate sense of creativity in problem-solving, and a mindset of: “provide the best product, strive to make “it” better, nothing is impossible”.

As long as Sean can remember, he has always gravitated towards working with his own two hands. Fortunately for Sean, serving as an Operations Assistant at Open Sky gives him an opportunity to do just that all day, every day. As a product of and a believer in life-changing wilderness experiences, Sean values his job because he enjoys accomplishing great things with good people in the backcountry. Coming from a loving and caring family, it is easy for Sean to support the family-oriented program that is Open Sky.

Sean loves to work hard and work hard doing what he loves. When one can get him away from work you will probably find him working on restoring one of his beloved classic trucks, eating (“judging”) pizza, skiing, playing with mountain bikes, welding in the garage, off-road driving in the mountains, or exploring with his adventurous partner, Lela.
